I hate CISCO AnyConnect for its cryptic error messages. I feel like lucky when CISCO AnyConnect connects to VPN without throwing any obscure error.

Meraki is okay for small environments and companies that don't have dedicated admins, but we are a company with 36 off-sites, thousands of users and it is ridiculous to work with Meraki. Their dashboard is nice and Auto-VPN too, but that's it.

If there is a customer or you that want to try Anyconnect you can speak with your dedicated Meraki SE and he/she will submit a request to the product team. To run the new software, your MX must run at least firmware version 16.x and you must apply Cisco AnyConnect plus license to your firewall.

So today I stumbled upon this weird error which says 'Failed to initialize connection subsystem'. Initially I thought it was caused due to broken internet connection, but later found that was not the case.
This error message is thrown when Internet Explorer is set to Work Offline mode. So, if you get this error, just go to Internet Explorer File Menu and uncheck Work Offline

Problem

For an existing client, I was setting up a new user. I connected their laptop though my mobile phone and attempted to connect. This is the error I got.

Cisco AnyConnect
Logon denied: Your environment does not meet the access criteria defined by your administrator.

Solution

A cursory glance over the firewall config didn’t yield anything in their AAA settings that was odd, they were simply using LDAP for authentication.

I probably should have guessed the answer earlier than I did, (because I’ve written an article on it). But the reason this was failing was, the firewall had a Dynamic Access Policy (DAP) attached to the remote VPN, that only permitted access to users that were in a particular Active Directory group. This user was not a member of that group.
